Project Description
On Sunday 1 July 2018, the London Symphony Orchestra held the latest of its flagship summer concerts in London’s Trafalgar Square. The event was the first to be conducted by Sir Simon Rattle following his arrival at the LSO in 2017 and was available to attend for free by 10,000 music lovers in London’s most iconic public space, while being streamed worldwide for the first time in partnership with YouTube. The event has become an embodiment of the orchestra’s belief in access to classical music for all, in or out of the concert hall.
Following an ambitious rebrand in 2017, the Orchestra wanted a new identity for the Trafalgar Square event that would reflect the progressive and ‘always moving’ nature of their programming and performances.
Agency Solution
We created a bold, moving identity featuring colourful abstract butterflies, inspired by the British summertime and the liberation of classical music from the concert hall to the public gathered outdoors.
Created in partnership with a digital artist by interpreting high quality motion capture data of Sir Simon Rattle conducting, the butterflies trace the path of the conductor’s baton through the air, leaving colourful trails as a visual record of the creation of the Orchestra’s performance.
High resolution stills taken from the animation form the imagery for the event, appearing across poster sites, programmes, signage, staging and online during the promotion and streaming of the concert.
