MAXON, the makers of the 3D animation software Cinema 4D (our main pipeline tool) asked us to showcase their latest release, R18. Their main objectives involved piquing interest in the new software, raising the profile of Cinema 4D and ultimately increasing sales. Completely trusting of our craft, they allowed us total creative freedom, only requesting that certain new features of the software be utilised during the production of the film.
With minimal creative direction from MAXON we had to ensure we kept relevance and appeal to the target audiences: design, motion & VFX companies, fellow motion designers, animators and prospective animators from across the globe. It was of utmost importance to create a memorable, different and distinguished piece that would excite the industry and be instantly recognizable as the launch piece of Cinema 4D R18.
We set out to challenge ourselves in two different ways: on one hand we strived to create life-like animals, which is an incredibly difficult thing to do in CG, and on the other hand we wanted to create a visual look that hasn’t been done before. The challenge was to strive for a cinematic and epic mood, while still incorporating a strong and distinctive design language.
Our goal was to create something unique and special that showcases the abilities of the software, whilst being superbly engaging. A strange and playful atmosphere that captivates the viewer's full attention on a very short and intense ride.
