People with rheumatoid arthritis will often complete hand exercises to keep their joints mobile – and many of these movements are similar to the gestures used in sign language. This insight gave rise to a new exercise regime for rheumatoid arthritis patients enabling them to learn sign language while completing their therapy. This not only benefits patients but also increases opportunities for communication with sign language users.
